Durham-Cambridge Doctoral Workshop in EU Law

 

Durham University, 5–6 March 2015

Igniting European Union Law: Frameworks for the Future

The Durham European Law Institute (DELI) and the Cambridge Centre for European Legal Studies (CELS) welcome submissions for their joint Doctoral Workshop in EU law to be held at Durham University on 5–6 March 2015. The highlights will include a keynote address by Professor Damian Chalmers (LSE, Professor of European Union Law) and panels chaired by prominent academics in their field of expertise.

 

CELS and DELI welcome a wide variety of paper proposals in the field of European Union Law and that fit within one of the workshop’s three panels: constitutional law, internal market and substantive policies.

 

The panels will be chaired by prominent academics in their field of expertise, including Professor Robert Schütze, Professor Mathias Siems, Professor Eleanor Spaventa from Durham University and Dr Albertina Albors-Llorens, Dr Markus Gehring and Dr Alicia Hinarejos from the University of Cambridge. The selected speakers will receive oral comments on their papers by one of the chairs in the panel.

 

Accepted papers will also be considered for publication in the Cambridge Journal of International and Comparative Law (CJICL).

 

Papers can encompass empirical approaches, theoretical discussions and perspectives from practice.

 

Subject areas of interest for submission include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Political, legislative and judicial structure of the EU: evaluation, challenges and proposals;

  • The democratic challenge: problems of legitimacy and democratic deficit;

  • Redefining EU competences;

  • Administrative governance: cooperation between the EU and national authorities;

  • Primacy, national responses and conflicts;

  • Federalism, constitutionalism, postnationalism: from theoretical approaches to practical considerations;

  • The Charter and fundamental rights;

  • Differentiated integration in the EU;

  • The Euro area crisis: further integration, socio-economic solidarity, etc.;

  • Non-discrimination: citizenship, age, gender, sexual orientation, etc.;

  • Citizenship of the EU: social, political and economic status; right to reside; social protection and solidarity;

  • Environmental law;

  • Competition law;

  • Data protection;

  • Single market and the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice;

  • Consumer protection;

  • EU counter-terrorism policies.

Notification of acceptance:                                                                             19 January 2015

Completed paper submission:                                                                        19 February 2015

Submission of final paper to the CJICL:                                                         12 October 2015

 

Submission Information

 

Applications can be submitted to durhamcambridgephdworkshop@gmail.com. They should include an abstract of not more than 500 words and a brief biography or CV. Please send as PDF files: Lastname-Firstname-Abstract/Bio.pdf.

 

Numbers are limited and early submission is highly recommended. Accommodation costs and the conference dinner in the evening of 5 March will be covered for the selected speakers.
